Things just seemed to click. After months of rigorous studying at NAV CANADA’s air traffic services training program, Jessica Richer says the skills she learned from her instructors began to unite, helping her chart a clear path to become a certified flight information specialist.

“It has been surprising just how much we are capable of learning,” says Richer. “Qualities like being hardworking, curious and consistent are just as important, if not more, than the knowledge you bring into careers at NAV CANADA.”

Here’s how Jessica leaves ordinary behind.

What is your role and how long have you been working at NAV CANADA?

I have been with the Company for four years. My role is a Flight Information Specialist at the London Flight Information Centre (FIC).

How do you describe what you do for a living to your family and friends?

I like to describe my job to friends and family as an information centre for all things aviation. Although monitoring and providing weather briefings to pilots is one of our main duties, the questions and tasks we encounter at the FIC vary widely from day to day. If we do not know the answer to a question a pilot has at the FIC, we surely will know where to find it.

What attracted you to work at NAV CANADA?

Before applying to NAV CANADA I was introduced to many individuals who worked for the Company. It became apparent NAV CANADA was not only a fantastic company to work for, but those I spoke with really enjoyed their work, environment, and colleagues. Initially I was unaware that careers in air traffic services were even an option. The more I learned, the more interested I became in this incredibly unique and rewarding career that was like nothing I had experienced before. The challenge of training, the uniqueness of the field itself, the opportunity for growth, and the wonderful people, were all aspects that attracted me to apply.

What has surprised you about the career path you have chosen?

It has been surprising just how much we are capable of learning. Training is challenging and at times can be overwhelming. You are learning a large amount of information in a relatively short amount of time and it may feel impossible. However, if you continue to be open to learning, you will continue to absorb what is being taught, you will adapt, and one day things just seem to click. Qualities like being hardworking, curious, and consistent are just as important, if not more, than the knowledge you bring into this career.

How has COVID-19 impacted your work?

Unfortunately, the pandemic did negatively affect the aviation industry. However, here at the London FIC we were very fortunate to continue to work while the Company took every precaution to ensure our safety. There were many changes, some of which led to the London FIC assuming new duties. We also began working in smaller groups to ensure distancing and cleanliness, which meant less staff and other changes to manage the impacts of the pandemic. However, the circumstances led to a bonding experience amongst coworkers as teamwork, great work ethic, and respect for each others’ safety were all at the forefront of our day to day lives.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at NAV CANADA?

If you can talk to or read about the experiences of NAV CANADA employees, it can offer helpful insights into the varying opportunities provided by the Company. I had no prior aviation knowledge before entering this career. If you enjoy an equally challenging and rewarding career, are hardworking and open to new experiences, this may be the place for you.

What are some of your favourite things to do outside of work?

Outside of work I really enjoy exploring nature with my husky Luna. We love to hike, find new parks to explore and go to the beach. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, cooking, reading, and crafting.

What is your biggest achievement to date?

My biggest achievement while with NAV CANADA has been one of personal growth. Working at a FIC requires you to attain a vast amount of knowledge, speak with individuals of varying experience and from all parts of Canada and sometimes the United States. Finding the confidence in my ability and the self assurance that I am capable and knowledgeable in my role, has been extremely rewarding and a huge personal accomplishment. The reward of this career has begun to outgrow the challenge and I look forward to what the future holds.
