National – VOR Replacement Project

NAV CANADA, the country's provider of civil air navigation services, conducted an aeronautical study that reviewed the requirements for very-high frequency (VHF) omnidirectional range (VOR).

Implementation of the NAVAID Modernization Program will result in approximately 60 VORs remaining in service to support a recovery network in the event of a total or partial prolonged GNSS outage. The remaining VORs are reaching the end of their life cycle and will be replaced. The replacement program began in 2020 and is expected to be completed by 2028.

For the spring/summer 2022 season the VOR replacement project is targeting 6 VOR/Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) sites. Pilots can anticipate VOR and DME unserviceability which may impact the ability to navigate some airways segments and fly specific instrument flight procedures. Outages will be notified via NOTAM. Below are tentatively planned dates and are subject to change.
