CAR287, a Winnipeg-based band, is making waves with their fresh sound, new music in 2025, and deep roots in the NAV CANADA community. Their journey highlights how transferable skills from musicians—such as teamwork, quick decision-making, and adaptability—can apply beyond the stage. What began as a musical connection among colleagues has grown into an exciting journey, blending professional lives with artistic passion. Their upcoming single releases mark an important milestone for the band, showcasing their talent and dedication.
CAR287 was born in a basement—because Winnipeg winters are too cold for playing in a garage. With an imminent gig at the to NAV CAN Jam (an annual charity fundraiser event put on by employees) and no consensus on the band name, someone (Air Traffic Controller and then Drummer John Kyriakopoulos) suggested the address they were rehearsing at— the rest is history!
On February 15, CAR287 released two singles: "Feel It Coming On" and "Highway Strong". These tracks reflect the band’s ability to combine heartfelt lyrics with captivating melodies. "Feel It Coming On" captures the thrill of unexpected love, weaving vibrant melodies with an energetic rhythm that stays with you. It’s a song about those surprising, life-changing moments of connection. Meanwhile, "Highway Strong" takes listeners on a nostalgic journey through cherished memories of road trips and adventure, painting vivid images of carefree laughter and connection.
Travis Wog, retired YWG Tower/Terminal Controller, said, “I think the diversity of our music is our sound identity. We can’t be pegged into one genre. We draw inspiration from our favourite rock bands spanning from the 70’s until present. We love rock, blues, folk and even pop music. We write about life, love, some silly things and of our deep connection to our city, province and country. I’m very proud of the music we have created and love it every time we get on stage together.”
The singles are available on Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms, making it easy to stream CAR287 music anywhere. For fans looking for something tangible, the band also offers "45" vinyl singles. These songs are just the beginning, paving the way for their debut album, "Looking Through the Lens," to launch on September 20, 2025.
ATC Supervisor Jay Yarmey tells the story behind the album’s name, “Everyone brings their ideas and influences into the mix (when writing music) and Terry had this amazing poem, which is a true story about a homeless man living in the street. The man asks a photographer and his model to take his picture because he doesn't want to be forgotten. They did take his picture and when they went to give it to him, they found he had passed away. The song is called "Take My Picture" and the line we used is "Looking through the Lens" ...a life’s story revealed... I hope the listeners feel the emotion when they hear that song and find that there are a lot of songs that they can relate to.”

The members of CAR287 share more than just a love for music—they share a connection to NAV CANADA. The band’s lineup includes Jay Yarmey, an ATC Supervisor, on acoustic guitar and vocals; Travis Wog, a Terminal Controller, on lead guitar and vocals; Ryan Olenick, spouse of Winnipeg ACC Simulation Specialist Brandi Olenick (an accomplished musician as well) on drums; Terry Ferguson, a retired Manager and former Flight Service Specialist, on bass; and Derek Gaboury, spouse of a Winnipeg FIR Manager, on keys and background vocals. While Derek has recently stepped away from the band, his contributions to their album remain integral.

This unique connection to NAV CANADA has shaped the band’s journey. Many members first showcased their musical talents at the NAV CAN Jam, an annual event that brought employees together for over a decade. Performing at these jams fostered camaraderie and allowed the band to develop their sound. Over time, these performances evolved into a dedicated project, demonstrating how shared passions can thrive in a supportive community.
As a singer, Jay Yarmey feels that some of the skills he practices as a controller are essential when performing live. “Making decisions under pressure is a necessity for ATC, but when you are singing a song like Santeria and the excitement makes you forget the words, you have to make an instant decision. My quick thinking and decision making allowed me to just make up a whole verse about how I forgot the words, treating the audience to a unique version of that cover song!! 25 years of quick thinking and decision making as a controller definitely helped me there.”
CAR287’s creative process reflects their determination and artistry. In 2024, the band recorded new material at Private Ear Studios, a renowned Winnipeg space hosting iconic acts like Propagandhi and Begonia. The live-off-the-floor sessions captured the energy and authenticity of their sound, culminating in a collection of songs that balance infectious energy with heartfelt nostalgia.
The band’s name, CAR287, pays homage to its NAV CANADA roots while signalling a broader journey. With a growing local following and an album on the horizon, its story highlights the intersection of work, creativity, and community. Its music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a testament to how shared experiences can lead to something extraordinary.
As their debut album approaches, CAR287 invites listeners to join the ride. Whether you’re streaming their singles or spinning their vinyl, their songs promise to connect and inspire.
