At first glance, controlling the skies and creating art may seem worlds apart. Yet for Mike Fantuz, an Air Traffic Controller (ATC) at NAV CANADA, the same precision, observation, and creativity that guide aircraft safely through Canadian airspace also help him craft intricate aerial landscapes on canvas. His hobby as a painter and his professional life as an air traffic controller may be two sides of the same coin, both requiring attention to detail, spatial awareness and a deep understanding of the world from different perspectives.
Mike’s journey into air traffic control began with a love for problem-solving and a desire to engage in a challenging, fast-paced environment. Starting his career at NAV CANADA, Mike quickly realized that air traffic control isn’t just about relaying instructions or managing aircraft—it’s about seeing the bigger picture, while being attuned to the smallest details. Every shift, he monitors and coordinates flight paths, ensuring safety and efficiency as planes move through the skies.
Mike’s work is both technical and intuitive. His role demands a combination of quick thinking and the ability to manage multiple moving parts, qualities that overlap strongly with his artistic endeavors. “As an air traffic controller, you have to constantly observe, anticipate and adjust,” Mike says. “In many ways, it’s like creating a painting—you plan, but you also adapt to what’s happening in real time.”
